Primary Function of Organizational Unit

North Carolina Cooperative Extension gives our residents easy access to the resources and expertise of NC State University and NC A&T State University. Through educational programs, publications, and events, Cooperative Extension field faculty deliver unbiased, research-based information to North Carolina citizens.

Essential Job Duties

The agent in this position will coordinate the Community Garden/School Garden Program, a gardening resource program within Guilford County Cooperative Extension that works directly with the City of Greensboro and City of High Point’s Parks and Recreation departments, Guilford County Parks, Guilford County Schools and other partnering agencies. The position assists individuals, communities, agencies and schools with establishing and sustaining community/school gardens through an asset based community development model.

Other Work/Responsibilities

The position will develop educational resources, train garden mentors, develops leadership and organizational capacity within communities to sustain gardening efforts, and train gardeners on fruit and vegetable production practices. The agent in this position will:

-manage countywide inventory of community and school gardens on public and private lands

-oversee and manage plot allocation and programming of community garden spaces located within City of Greensboro, City of High Point, and Guilford County-owned parks, with maintenance support provided by the host agency

-provide training and support for development of new community gardening efforts

-work with communities to sustain existing gardens

-provide technical training for gardeners and teachers while also providing teachers with curriculum material that aligns with common core and essential standards

-create and promote a quarterly County wide newsletter related to shared gardening

-initiate and maintain a countywide Community Garden Advisory Board

-initiate and maintain a School Garden Advisory Board for the county

-manage two small annual grants that provide funds for startup or expansion

- pursue additional funding sources

-evaluate program annually and market results to the community

-serve as a member of the City of Greensboro’s Community Food Task Force, the Greater High Point Food Alliance Board, and other related group to increase food access in Guilford County

Minimum Experience/Education

One of the following educational requirements: – A Bachelor’s degree with a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 overall or a 3.0 (based on a 4.0 scale) in an agricultural or related field, – A Bachelor’s degree and the completion of at least one-half of coursework in a Master’s degree curriculum with a cumulative grade point average 3.0 or higher with at least one of the degrees in an agricultural or related field, or – Completion of a Master’s degree with at least one of the degrees in an agricultural or related field. Also required: a personal automobile; computer literacy; strong oral and written communication skills; the ability to plan, implement, market, and evaluate educational programs; willingness to work as a team member and support a total Extension program; and the ability to handle multiple demands and set priorities. Personal Attributes: Successful performance of the duties encompassed in the Extension Agent’s job requires that the individual possess habits of industry, a sense of responsibility, and a genuine appreciation for the worth of the individual. The employee must be adept in both oral and written communication. The Extension Agent is eligible to become a member of the non-tenure track/special faculty at North Carolina State University. The Extension Agent has primary responsibility for planning, executing, and evaluating that phase of Extension programs within assigned areas of program responsibility. The Extension Agent cooperates with colleagues in the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service and leaders in performing assigned responsibilities. The performance of assigned responsibilities is governed by the philosophy, objectives, policies, and procedures of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service.

Departmental Required Skills

A bachelor’s degree in horticultural science or a related agricultural field is required.

A high level of computer competency is desired.
