Primary Function of Organizational Unit

The NC State Veterinary Hospital (VH), established in 1983, is one of the highest rated academic medical centers in the country, serving communities throughout North Carolina as well as many other states. The mission of the Veterinary Hospital is three-fold:

With over seventeen clinical services staffed by board certified specialists, many of whom are not only nationally but also internationally renowned, the VH is on the cutting edge of veterinary medicine. Patients benefit from the combined expertise of multiple specialists utilizing a team approach to patient health care. Each year, over 30,000 patients are treated in the VH.

Essential Job Duties

Serve as a small animal emergency clinical veterinarian. Receive after hours primary care and referral cases from surrounding veterinary practices and teach small animal interns and senior veterinary students on service about basic emergency care and procedures. Communicate with referring veterinarians regarding cases and specialty services in the teaching hospital including surgery, cardiology, internal medicine, neurology, oncology, ophthalmology, radiology, and anesthesia. Conduct daily didactic teaching rounds and participate in formal evaluations of students. Mentor and instruct small animal rotating interns and emergency and critical care residents who are on duty.

Other Work/Responsibilities

Assigned administrative duties including committee assignments on communication issues between reception, technicians, and doctors.

Conduct daily didactic teaching rounds with students rotating enrolled in VMC 960 (4th-year course in emergency medicine). Participate in formal evaluations (“grading”) of 4th-year students rotating through VMC 960.

Minimum Education/Experience

Relevant professional degree and licensure in the appropriate clinical field.

Departmental Required Skills

Considerable experience in emergency/critical care medicine.

Must be able to lift up to 60 pounds on an occasional basis.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

Prefer a minimum of three years receiving emergency cases and or a small animal rotating internship.

Required License or Certification

DVM and North Carolina Veterinary faculty certificate or licensure is required.
