Primary Function of Organizational Unit

The mission of the NC State University Department of Athletics is to prepare student-athletes to compete at the highest level and to inspire them to be leaders now and for the future by providing the best environment to achieve their athletic, academic, and personal aspirations as well as providing support for the professional development of our coaches and staff, all within the role of the greater institutional relationships to the University. The Sports Medicine Department is responsible for providing medical care for student athletes.

Essential Job Duties

The Athletics Department at NC State University is excited to announce the creation of a second Sport Psychologist position to better serve our student-athlete population of approximately 550. Housed within the Sports Medicine Department, this position will be located in one of our athletic facilities and report directly to the current Director of Sport Psychology, with an indirect reporting line to the Director of the Counseling Center.

Job duties include, but are not limited to:

• Educate regarding role as Sport Psychologist within Athletics Department and create effective, working relationships with coaches, administrators, and student-athletes.
• Conduct intake assessments and provide individual psychotherapy, crisis intervention, and performance consultations to student-athletes and work within integrated healthcare model.
• Provide consultation to and education for coaches, administrators, and staff regarding student-athlete emotional well-being, academic success, athletic performance, and emerging team needs.
• Participate in development and implementation of leadership, transition, and health/wellness programming for student-athletes.
• Design and deliver educational, insight-oriented, and performance enhancing team interventions per coach directives, needs assessment, and provider availability.
• Participate in multidisciplinary treatment and performance teams, including but not limited to substance abuse, eating disorders, and Pack Performance.
• Consult and collaborate with Counseling Center staff regarding CC initiatives and client work, as appropriate.
• Shared participation in after-hours “on call” for student-athletes. Ability to work evening and weekend hours.
• Create and maintain accurate documentation and record keeping utilizing EMR.
• Maintain good standing with licensure boards and accrediting organizations.

Minimum Education/Experience

• Master’s degree in social work, psychology, counseling, or related-field and three years of clinical practice working with college population.

Departmental Required Skills

• Formal training and experience in sport psychology and/or performance excellence.
• Excellent oral and written communication, organizational skills, interpersonal skills, and analytical skills.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

• Doctoral degree in clinical or counseling psychology.
• Graduation from APA accredited doctoral program and completion of APA accredited internship.
• Certified Consultant-AASP.
• Ability to work with medical providers for integrated, collaborative, and comprehensive medical and mental healthcare.
• Experience in a university counseling center is strongly preferred. Successful candidates will be multi-culturally affirming with demonstrated competence in working with a diverse student-athlete population.
• Preference for candidates with experience utilizing a time-limited model of care.
• Experience working with Division 1 athletic departments.

Required License or Certification

License or license-eligible as psychologist in North Carolina.
