Primary Function of Organizational Unit

As part of the Land Grant University, the Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology is composed of over 40 faculty that direct a diverse portfolio of programs in teaching, research and extension components. Collectively, these strengths not only serve our clientele and our science, but also provide a rich environment for graduate education and training that can be tailored to the specific career interests of the student, irrespective of whether they prefer training in the basic sciences or are preparing for a career in extension. Our education and research programs provide graduate and undergraduate students with unique hands-on learning opportunities using the latest technologies.

Essential Job Duties

The Research Assistant will be mainly responsible for conducting field and lab research in tobacco and field crop diseases. The position will grow host plants in the lab, greenhouse, and field, maintain plants, use sterile technique, store microbial long-term cultures, work in a Level II Biosafety Cabinet, harvest host and pathogen tissue, isolate RNA and DNA from plant and pathogen tissues, perform PCR, quantitative PCR, agarose gel electrophoresis, and DNA sequencing. The position will be responsible for collecting and analyzing research data. The position will also assist in writing scientific publications, as well as present research findings/results at meetings/conferences.

Other Work/Responsibilities

This incumbent will need to travel off-site alone to observe research and must independently be able to travel from location to location without reliance on others or the advanced notice that is often required of alternative means of transportation.

Minimum Education/Experience
  • Post-baccalaureate degree in plant biology, plant pathology or related science field or a Bachelor’s degree and 3+ relevant years of experience.
  • Experience working with plants and/or microorganisms in field and laboratory settings including growing plants/microbes, taking care of plants and cultures, sterile technique, and storing microbial long-term cultures.
Departmental Required Skills
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, experience giving oral and poster presentations and writing scientific publications.
  • Previous experience in lab management including training and supervision of other lab staff, lab safety compliance, and maintenance of equipment.
  • Experience working with plants, microorganisms and computer software.
  • Experience in plant care and sterile technique.
  • Microsoft Office suite, Adobe suite, R or similar statistical analysis platforms, and Endnote or similar packages.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
  • Master’s degree in plant biology, plant pathology or a related science field or a comparable record of independent research productivity.
  • Experience working with plant pathogens, microbiome techniques, ecology techniques.
  • Experience generating, handling and analyzing data.
  • More than 2 years of experience in plant biology and microbial research including growing plants/microbes, taking care of plants/cultures, sterile technique, and molecular biology experience.
Required License or Certification
  • A valid drivers license is required for travel. NC drivers license required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained.
