Primary Function of Organizational Unit

The Golden LEAF Biomanufacturing Training and Education Center (BTEC) is a unique, cross-disciplinary instructional center that provides educational and training opportunities to develop skilled professionals for the biomanufacturing industry. BTEC’s audience includes NC State University students and professionals already involved in biomanufacturing or related industries. BTEC also provides bioprocess development and analytical services to a wide range of customers from academia and industry.

Essential Job Duties

Laboratory Managers at BTEC provide support for lab activities associated with NC State University undergraduate/graduate courses and lab activities associated with BTEC’s Professional Development Short Course Program. In addition, the laboratory managers support projects that are part of BTEC’s Bioprocess and Analytical Services Program.

Essential Job Duties include but are not limited to the following:

• Prepare lab activities for assigned courses in downstream bioprocess operations with input from senior staff.
• Instruct course participants during lab sessions with supervised support.
• Provide hands-on support for bioprocess services and internal projects.
• Develop and apply an operational knowledge of bioprocess equipment for downstream operations at a range of scales.
• Support the start-up and commissioning of new processing equipment.
• Identify and report equipment issues.
• Convey information via written and oral communication.
• Ensure safety in laboratories.
• Follow documented procedures and policies with the BTEC facility and at the University.
• Perform any other tasks/responsibilities assigned by supervisor.

Other Work/Responsibilities
Minimum Education/Experience
  • post-baccalaureate credentials relevant to position
    OR
    • BS degree in science or engineering (Biology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Engineering, or related discipline) AND at least two years of hands-on experience in downstream bioprocessing (recovery and purification of biomolecules), using unit operations such as depth filtration, centrifugation, chromatography, and/or ultrafiltration.

Departmental Required Skills

• Good interpersonal skills, including the ability to work with other operations staff and faculty at BTEC.
• Good problem solving and decision making skills.
• Proficiency with word processing and spreadsheet software.
• Ability to coordinate preparation of lab activities necessary for daily operation and student instruction.
• Knowledge of principles of aseptic technique and the ability to transfer that knowledge to students and other BTAs.
• Ability to execute process steps using process instructions and BTEC documentation practices.
• Knowledge of good documentation practices.
• A developing operational knowledge of downstream (recovery or purification) biomanufacturing operations, including depth filtration, centrifugation, chromatography, and/or ultrafiltration equipment, and the ability to transfer that knowledge to students.
• Ability to learn operation of new bioprocessing equipment and to run new processes.
• Knowledge of standard laboratory safety and biosafety practices.
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

• At least two years of hands-on experience in downstream bioprocessing (recovery and purification of biomolecules) in industry, using unit operations such as depth filtration, centrifugation, chromatography, and/or ultrafiltration.
