Primary Function of Organizational Unit

The Disability Services Office’s mission is to support the ongoing development of an accessible university/workplace that embraces and celebrates diversity. We pursue this mission by collaborating with faculty and students to determine reasonable and effective accommodations for students; by educating the campus community; and by promoting equal access and opportunity. We also attempt to understand the issues of accessibility for all campus constituency groups, and where feasible, attempt to create a climate of cooperation.

Essential Job Duties

The Assistant Director will have general responsibilities to assist in all areas of service of the Disability Services Office (DSO) and will attend required administrative, training and supervisory meetings. This position reports administratively to the Director of the DSO.

The Assistant Director will evaluate students’ clinical documentation to determine which impairments rise to the level of a disabling condition and can be reasonably accommodated. (Such an assessment is often not only based upon a diagnosis and clinical recommendations alone.) The Assistant Director also consults with faculty and staff persons to clarify what “access” means in each academic context to which accommodations are applied and what methods practically achieve them. This work requires the incumbent to be integral to the DSO team while also independently drawing upon specialized training and knowledge to facilitate student access to their learning environment.
