North Carolina State’s Department of Teacher Education and Learning Sciences (TELS) with more than 32 full-time faculty members, 14 part-time faculty members, and students offer the Ph.D., master’s degrees, and undergraduate degrees. Programs and areas of study include Elementary Education, Middle Grades English Language Arts and Social Studies Education, Learning, Design and Technology, New Literacies and Global Learning, Curriculum and Developmental Supervision, Special Education, Elementary Learning Sciences, Literacy and English Language Arts Education, and Educational Psychology.

Essential Job Duties

The TELS Department Head reports to the Dean of the College and works collaboratively with the College leadership to realize the vision and mission of the College. The Head is responsible for the administration of the Department and provides leadership to enhance the equality and impact of faculty research, teaching, and service efforts. He or she recruits, recommends hires, and supervises faculty and departmental staff, and manages departmental budgets. The Head promotes the department through representation in college, university, and external strategic initiatives. The Department Head may also engage in research, teaching, publication, externally funded projects, and other professorial activities.

Other Work/Responsibilities
Minimum Education/Experience

PhD (or equivalent degree) and a distinguished record of scholarship sufficient for appointment as a full professor in the department.

Departmental Required Skills

Demonstrated success in significant faculty leadership roles and/or university administration.

The demonstrated commitment to diversity, social justice, interdisciplinary work, and collegial leadership.

A distinguished record of scholarship sufficient for appointment as a full professor in the department.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

A successful record of grant pursuits is preferred and experience with outreach, funding agencies, and university administration is desirable.
