Essential Job Duties

The content strategist and writer will work closely with the College of Education’s director of marketing and communication to develop and execute a content strategy that positions the college as one of the leading colleges of education in the nation. The person in the position must have a passion for storytelling, must be able to write clear and compelling copy across all platforms, must have the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously (often on tight deadlines), and must demonstrate a commitment to integrity, quality, and accuracy. The content strategist and writer reports to the College of Education’s director of marketing and communication.

Work with the college’s marketing and communication (marcom) team to develop and implement a content strategy that amplifies the college

Conceptualize, research, write, and edit clear and compelling content for multiple audiences, including alumni, prospective students, and education leaders, and for multiple platforms, including the college’s website, digital communications, and print pieces

Produce various types of content, including profiles, emails, features, news releases, news articles, lists, annual reports, white papers, case statements, and Alternative Story Forms

Work with the marcom team and the college’s leadership team to communicate the relevance and impact of the college’s work, particularly faculty research and activities, to external constituencies such as school leaders, elected officials, and other university leaders

Collaborate with the college’s development office to write and edit development communication materials, including donor solicitation letters and proposals

Provide writing and editing support for the college’s senior leadership team

Provide strategic input into the college’s annual and multi-year marketing and communication plans and partner with the marcom team to champion the college to internal and external stakeholders

Work with the marcom team to monitor and analyze content performance and develop strategies to improve engagement with content

Work in partnership with the college’s marcom team, departments, and units to ensure all marcom materials reflect well on the college and adhere to the NC State brand

Develop and maintain effective relationships with the college’s marcom team and provide excellent customer service to the college’s stakeholders

Other Work/Responsibilities
Minimum Experience/Education

Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Departmental Required Skills

Strong writing portfolio that demonstrates a flair for storytelling and an ability to write for different audiences and platforms

High attention to detail, accuracy, and quality control

An understanding of the different ways to tell stories and communicate messages on different platforms

Ability to prioritize projects, meet deadlines, and work in a fast-paced environment with constantly shifting priorities

Must be able to work both independently and collaboratively and keep internal stakeholders updated on projects

Must thrive in an environment with a constant feedback loop and high standards and that embraces ongoing learning and refinement

Experience with AP style guide

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, English, or related field from an accredited college or university, and at least two years of writing and editing experience

High school diploma or equivalency and at least five years of writing and editing experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Familiarity with WordPress, Google Analytics, and G Suite

Experience working at a newspaper or magazine and turning around clean, clear copy on deadline

Experience working in a college or educational setting or other multi-layered, complex organization

Understanding of effective SEO strategies

A heart for education

Required License or Certification
