Primary Function of Organizational Unit

North Carolina is a global leader in poultry and swine production and has a diverse animal agriculture sector including dairy, beef cattle, and aquaculture. North Carolina is also among the most diverse in the US in food and fiber plant production. In addition, food processing and bioprocessing from both animal and plant production is becoming a major economic driver in the state. For these industries to be globally competitive and environmentally sustainable, significant investment in managing agricultural waste and co-products is necessary. North Carolina State University is building an international reputation for science based discovery, innovation, and education, including a prominent focus on agriculture, food safety/security, and environment/resource management.

Essential Job Duties

The Prestage Department of Poultry Science is searching for a faculty member who will be a part of enhancing the reputation of the College of Agriculture & Life Sciences (CALS) and NC State University in North Carolina, the US, and abroad by stimulating, developing, and leading relevant research and education programs and by engaging a broad range of interest groups. This faculty’s program would also be expected to implement the NC State University Feed Mill Educational Unit, the Animal Food and Nutrition Consortium, and the Animal Academy initiatives that complete the nutrient and food production integration cycle. The successful candidate will develop a strong Extension program and conduct applied research in technologies and management systems that either remediate environmental emissions from animal production facilities or add value to agricultural co-products, such as manure, moralities, processing offal, and other residuals. In addition, the candidate will be expected to participate in academic programs as needed. Experience or expertise in technology development and environmental performance verification that contribute to environmentally and economically sustainable agribusiness is desirable.

This faculty would be expected to collaborate with other faculty associated with the CALS Animal and Poultry Waste Management Center (APWMC), the NC State University Feed Mill Educational Unit, and other educational units. The global objective of the APWMC is to provide solutions to animal and agricultural production waste problems and create value for people and businesses including enhancement of the environment and conservation of resources.

This faculty member would also be expected to work closely with other Extension Specialists, Extension Area Specialized Agents, county Extension Agents, and the NC Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services to develop nutrient emission management plans, to evaluate, validate, and/or demonstrate technologies that remediate animal production waste problems, and educate industry and consumer interest groups about controlling emissions from poultry and livestock production. This faculty would also contribute to prominent Extension programs that position NC State University as a global source for research-based information and related educational programs.

The successful candidate will teach or co-teach 1 or 2 courses per year at the undergraduate or graduate level, depending on the interests of the candidate and the home department. A crosslisted course that addresses issues related to the management and processing of organic residuals from agricultural food production would be well received in several departments. Other teaching or guest lecturing opportunities may be related to the environmental, social, and political issues related to concentrated animal agriculture.

Recognizing that environmental, social, and political issues surrounding topics related to concentrated animal production are highly sensitive and dynamic, this faculty will have the flexibility pursue unique and special funding opportunities to support the program. Therefore, the successful candidate would be expected to collaborate with a wide range of funders such as federal agencies (USDA, NIF A, EPA, NSF and DOE), foundations, state and local governments, corporate stakeholders, and other research/education institutions.

Inclusiveness and diversity are central to the success of the College and University as a whole. Therefore, the selected candidate will be expected to foster an environment that is welcoming of all groups.
