Located within the college of Sciences at NC State, the Department of Marine, Earth, & Atmospheric Sciences (MEAS) is one of the largest interdisciplinary geoscience departments in the nation. Opportunities exist for disciplinary and interdisciplinary interactions with its more than 30 faculty. The department has approximately 240 undergraduates majoring in marine science, geology, and meteorology, and more than 100 graduate students involved in basic and applied studies of Earth systems. NC State is the largest university in North Carolina and hosts a number of related research and teaching units, including large programs in geotechnical and construction materials and the recently established Center for Geospatial Analytics: http://geospatial.ncsu.edu.

Essential Job Duties

The Department of Marine, Earth, and Atmospheric Sciences (MEAS) at North Carolina State University (NC State) intends to fill a tenure-track faculty position in atmospheric prediction and/or data assimilation. Possible research areas include, but are not limited to, storm-scale and mesoscale data assimilation, ensemble forecasting and analysis techniques, and the prediction and predictability of weather and climate across a range of scales. The successful candidate must demonstrate strong potential for outstanding accomplishments in research, research supervision, and teaching. Course offerings may include undergraduate or graduate classes in atmospheric dynamics, geophysical data assimilation, numerical methods and modeling, or other classes commensurate with the candidate’s interest and expertise. Enthusiastic engagement in NC State’s undergraduate degree program in meteorology is expected. MEAS places a high value on excellent instruction and the use of innovative teaching methods.

Other Work/Responsibilities

Mentoring and advising of undergraduate and graduate students, university and professional service, community outreach.

Minimum Education/Experience

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. degree in the atmospheric or related sciences.

Departmental Required Skills

The successful candidate must demonstrate strong potential for outstanding accomplishments in research, research supervision, and teaching.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

Desirable expertise includes exploitation of radar, satellite, and/or in-situ data, development of numerical techniques and visualization tools, expertise in employing diverse atmospheric models and ensemble techniques, and interest or experience working with operational or interdisciplinary collaborators.
