Essential Job Duties

Understanding the mechanistic basis of addiction will have considerable impact on our ability to stem the rising epidemic in substance abuse disorders. Powerful animal models and genetic tools have provided important insights over the past several decades. However, there are several important challenges that remain in our understanding of addiction. In particular, while considerable effort has been spent understanding the genetic basis of addiction, the role of the epigenome and chromatin is unclear. Chromatin is the collection of RNAs and proteins bound to genomic DNA that regulate the expression of genetic information. The primary purpose of this project is to develop a deeper understanding of chromatin’s role in substance abuse and in reward pathways in general. Towards the project’s primary goal, sub-aims are to develop molecular tools to perturb and interface with chromatin and to develop cellular and multicellular addiction models derived from human stem cells. The techniques and tools this position will develop and implement include high through-put molecular biology, biochemical assays such as ChIP, mammalian and microbial cell culture, flow cytometry, confocal microscopy, neurobiology, and systems biology.

Other Work/Responsibilities

Design and conduct experimental wet-lab and computational research. Co-write original research articles and reviews with the PI. Develop writing, presentation, and communication skills through developing postdoctoral fellowship and grant proposals with mentorship from the PI, developing mentoring skills through training PhD students, and developing oral presentation skills at scientific conferences. Experimental and computational skills include molecular biology, biochemistry, microscopy, flow cytometry, mammalian cell biology, and to a lesser extent computational or systems biology techniques.

Share lab duties including equipment maintenance and lab safety protocols in collaboration with other lab members. Present work at group meetings. Assist in mentoring graduate students.
