Essential Job Duties

This position is a full-time (1.0 FTE), 40-hour per week position that is partially funded by federal funds through the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP). This position is a pilot program in Johnston County and its continuance is contingent upon the availability of these funds and also a successful probationary period fulfilled by the selected candidate.

EFNEP is an educational program conducted through the North Carolina Cooperative Extension. The successful candidate of this position will be employed by NC State University and provide education to adults in the areas of food security and nutrition.

Other Work/Responsibilities

The individual in this position will recruit and enroll adult participants into the program, make regular teaching visits to enrollees either in the home or in group settings, teach basic principles of nutrition and food preparation skills, submit required program records as requested, market the program within the assigned area, recruit volunteers from within the community involving them in leadership roles, collaborate with local Cooperative Extension staff and agencies, and assist with securing program resources.

The EFNEP PA receives programmatic guidance from an EFNEP Extension Associate with overall supervision provided by the County Extension Director. The EFNEP PA and the EFNEP Extension Associate work with the Family and Consumer Science Agent to meet the needs of the county as identified by the local advisory council.

For four decades, EFNEP has been helping limited resource youth and families with children learn to eat healthier meals and snacks, make better use of food dollars and reduce the risk of food-borne illnesses. In collaboration with many organizations through the “Eat Smart, Move More” initiative, NC EFNEP aims to help reduce the rising tide of obesity by teaching youth and families practical skills resulting in changed behaviors to eat smart, move more and achieve a healthy weight.

Adult EFNEP reaches families with incomes at or below the poverty threshold, or families that qualify for federal food assistance programs (WIC, Food Stamps, TANF, Head Start, free or reduced school lunches) when these families have school-age or younger children living in the home. Pregnant women who qualify for WIC also qualify for EFNEP.
