Primary Function of Organizational Unit

North Carolina Cooperative Extension gives our residents easy access to the resources and expertise of NC State University and NC A&T State University. Through educational programs, publications, and events, Cooperative Extension field faculty deliver unbiased, research-based information to North Carolina citizens.

Franklin County is located in the Tar-Pamlico River basin and encompasses an area of approximately 491 square miles. The population consists of 64,705 people. According to recent agriculture data, Franklin County is ranked 45th in gross agricultural cash receipts at $75.98 million. Louisburg is the county seat with three other towns in the county Bunn, Franklinton and Youngsville. Franklin County has sixteen schools with over 8,000 students including three growing FFA programs in the high schools. Franklin County is a neighboring county to Wake County with both an urban and rural atmosphere, and is home to a number of manufacturing facilities. The county is home to one of the largest ornamental field nurseries on the East Coast along with a number of retail garden centers. The Landscaping Industry is growing with an increase in population and urban sprawl. The commercial fruit and vegetable industry includes strawberries, blackberries, blueberries, grapes, pickling cucumbers and various other products that are marketed at local farmers’ markets and roadside stands.

Essential Job Duties

The Extension Agent is responsible for planning, implementing and evaluating an outcome-based program addressing issues and opportunities identified in Franklin County.

The agent in this position must have technical competence in both consumer or urban horticulture and commercial horticulture and in the delivery of non-formal education programs, the identification of plants, pests and diagnosis of plant problems, assist with pesticide education, aquatic weed management, develop and work with stakeholder-based committees that provide direction for Extension programs; work with community organizations to effectively link Extension with local resources and clients.

The agent will also have the opportunity to develop a Master Gardener program that will effectively recruit, train and manage Extension Master Gardener volunteers to expand outreach efforts. Other duties will include working with the Franklin County Farmers Market Manager and Market Vendors with various educational activities.

Minimum Experience/Education

One of the following educational requirements: – A Bachelor’s degree with a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 overall or a 3.0 (based on a 4.0 scale) in an agricultural or related field, – A Bachelor’s degree and the completion of at least one-half of coursework in a Master’s degree curriculum with a cumulative grade point average 3.0 or higher with at least one of the degrees in an agricultural or related field, or – Completion of a Master’s degree with at least one of the degrees in an agricultural or related field. Also required: a personal automobile; computer literacy; strong oral and written communication skills; the ability to plan, implement, market, and evaluate educational programs; willingness to work as a team member and support a total Extension program; and the ability to handle multiple demands and set priorities. Personal Attributes: Successful performance of the duties encompassed in the Extension Agent’s job requires that the individual possess habits of industry, a sense of responsibility, and a genuine appreciation for the worth of the individual. The employee must be adept in both oral and written communication. The Extension Agent is eligible to become a member of the non-tenure track/special faculty at North Carolina State University. The Extension Agent has primary responsibility for planning, executing, and evaluating that phase of Extension programs within assigned areas of program responsibility. The Extension Agent cooperates with colleagues in the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service and leaders in performing assigned responsibilities. The performance of assigned responsibilities is governed by the philosophy, objectives, policies, and procedures of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service.

Departmental Required Skills

A Bachelor’s degree in Horticultural Science or an area related to the agent’s assigned responsibilities is required.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

A Master’s degree at time of hiring is desirable. The expectation is that a Master’s degree will be pursued after hiring.

Required License or Certification

Valid driver’s license and reliable personal transportation required and must be maintained.
