Primary Function of Organizational Unit

North Carolina Cooperative Extension gives our residents easy access to the resources and expertise of NC State University and NC A&T State University. Through educational programs, publications and events, Cooperative Extension agents deliver unbiased, research-based information to North Carolina citizens.

McDowell County has a population of 45,075, with a median household income of $35,965, and a per capita income of $18,717. North Carolina Cooperative Extension-McDowell County Center has a staff of five that work in a fast paced, energetic and multi-dimensional environment.

NCCE-McDowell County Center has a growing, vibrant, and diversified farm community, an active 4-H Program, an Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program that reaches elementary school-age youth, a growing Local Foods program, an Extension Community Association, an Extension Master Gardener program, Cattlemen’s Association, and McDowell Honey Bees, the local chapter of the NC State Beekeepers Association. The McDowell County Center has multiple partnerships with other county and city agencies and a strong relationship with the County Government and has been successful in writing and managing a variety of grants for Extension and other county partners. The Administrative Assistant position is critical to the success of all these programs and partnerships.

Essential Job Duties

The County Extension Administrative Assistant is the office manager for the County Extension Center. This position provides administrative support for Extension staff and programs.

Other Work/Responsibilities

- Greeting public
- Financial record management and budget tracking
- Processing incoming and outgoing mail
- Maintaining office supplies & office equipment
- Document formatting and proofreading
- Maintaining office records
- Office technology (computer) contact
- Assist with office compliance of all local, state, federal, and NC Cooperative Extension guidelines

Minimum Experience/Education

Graduation from high school and two years of related experience; or graduation from a two-year secretarial science or business administration program and one year related experience

Departmental Required Skills

- Must have the ability to work with diverse audiences
- Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision
- Must possess good written and oral communication skills
- Must be able to switch tasks quickly
- Must have good organizational skills
- Must possess efficient keyboarding and computer skills

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

- Experience with web page management, desktop publishing, and newsletter design and preparation are preferred.
- Previous Cooperative Extension experience is preferred
- Experience with Microsoft Office
- Prefer some experience with Google Suite of Applications
- Must be willing and able to adapt to new technologies and systems
