Essential Job Duties

Power Systems Engineer will have responsibilities for the design, construction and maintenance of the Medium Voltage distribution systems on the NCSU campus.

This is to include emergency and standby generator installation, operation and maintenance as well as the public street light system. Long range planning for the Power Systems infrastructure will also be a part of this position’s responsibilities. This infrastructure consists of three main substation points of delivery, metal clad switchgear, underground distribution circuits, sectionalizing switches, transformers and generators.

Departmental Required Skills

-10 plus years in the maintenance, design and/or operation of medium/high voltage systems. (At least 4 years of this should be in a management/supervisory position with responsibilities for capital planning, system renewal, personnel recruitment, managing and evaluation PM programs, and developing standards and procedures.)

-Demonstrated extensive knowledge and experience in the management, maintenance and operations of a high voltage distribution system and building/life safety emergency generators.

-Experience in the design of electrical distribution systems is required.

-Experience in long range capital planning, budgeting and personnel management.

-Extensive knowledge of safety and training requirements for employees working with medium voltage systems.

-Experience in the installation, operation and maintenance of emergency and stand by generators and automatic transfer switches.

-Relay protection coordination experience is required.

-In depth knowledge of medium voltage system characteristics and troubleshooting ability.

-Must be able to communicate goals and objectives effectively with assistant engineer, supervisor, shop personnel, designers/consultants and the general public.

-Must have ability to provide leadership and develop team concept for shop personnel.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

Professional Registration

PE Certification is highly desired.

Required License or Certification

A valid North Carolina driver’s license or the ability to obtain one by start date and must be maintained.

An Electrical Engineering Degree is required.
