Primary Function of Organizational Unit

The Department of Forest Biomaterials (FB) is part of NC State University’s College of Natural Resources (CNR) and offers comprehensive undergraduate and graduate programs in Sustainable Materials and Technology and Paper Science and Engineering. We are located in Raleigh, North Carolina, and our activities include teaching, research, extension programming, continuing education, and technical services that benefit the paper and pulp, wood products, housing, biomaterials, and bioenergy industries. Our on-campus facilities include classrooms, laboratories, libraries, special research collections and state-of-the-art research and testing facilities, including the Robertson Paper & Pulp Testing Laboratory and the Hodges Wood Products Laboratory (a 21,000 sq. foot facility that supports wood products production and testing as well as research into the physical and mechanical properties of wood), and the Forest Biomaterials and Bioenergy Laboratories. FB is currently home to 25 full-time faculty, 12 active adjunct faculty, 12 staff members, 20 research associates, 35 graduate students, and approximately 300 undergraduate students.

Essential Job Duties

The Department of Forest Biomaterials at NC State University is seeking applicants for a full-time, 12-month, tenure-track Wood Products Extension and academic (teaching and research) faculty position. The preferred candidate will have knowledge/skills/industrial experience in one or more of the following areas related to Wood Products and similar fields:

Innovative techniques and methods for recycling wood-based materials

Markets for the recycling and/or reuse of wood products

Housing and/or wood product construction

Renewable/sustainable materials or green building technology

New building techniques and designs to facilitate deconstruction

The successful applicant will be part of an eight-person sustainability team (three Wood
Products Extension faculty and five Sustainable Materials and Technology (SMT) academic faculty). Major responsibilities include developing an innovative extension program for the wood products industry and teaching one undergraduate class per year in the Sustainable Materials and Technology program. The delivery methods of extension and educational materials could include workshops, seminars, webinars, demonstrations, case studies,
publications, etc. The incumbent will also be expected to generate contracts and grants to fund extension relevant projects that can support graduate students and expand the impact of their extension program.

Other Work/Responsibilities

This is a split appointment position and the successful candidate will be expected to divide their time between extension and extension related research, teaching and service activities. It is expected that the major portion of the incumbent’s time will be spent on their extension program. Salary and start-up support will be commensurate with qualifications.

Minimum Education/Experience

A Ph.D. level degree in wood products, sustainability, engineering, environmental science/technology, or related area is required. The successful applicant must
have the ability and desire to develop and conduct an effective extension and education program in cooperation with faculty, staff, and industry. The candidate must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing using innovative technology transfer techniques. This position will be based in Raleigh but the incumbent must be willing to travel throughout North Carolina

• Renewable/sustainable materials or green building technology
• Sustainability criteria as related to wood products such as Environmental Product Declarations or other certification processes
• Wood products manufacturing processes and/or strategies
• Wood products/sustainable materials entrepreneurship
