We believe in sharing our knowledge with the people of North Carolina and in supporting the economic prosperity of NC communities through the wise use of its forest and natural resources. North Carolina is a state rich in forest resources with almost 60 percent, or 18.3 million acres, of the state covered in forests. The wise use of this resource is important for water and air quality, wildlife habitat, beautiful views, timber resources, and economic prosperity. Our extension and outreach programs work hard to make sure that the general public, landowners, community leaders, industry professionals and others all have an opportunity to learn of new discoveries and techniques affecting their lives in a timely manner.
We do this by providing educational programs and professional services that reach people in a variety of different ways. Our programs cover the spectrum, ranging from Christmas tree production to youth education.

The Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources has a faculty with a wide variety of strengths in forestry and natural resources management, policy, and economics, environmental technology, fisheries and wildlife, tree improvement, silviculture, forest biotechnology, international forestry, biodiversity, conservation and restoration ecology, and geographic information systems. The Department offers undergraduate, masters and doctoral degrees, and has a strong commitment to developing partnerships with communities. Faculty, staff, and students work together with business, industry, government, community groups, and non-government organizations to address a wide range of challenges facing our state and the world. The College of Natural Resources (CNR) at North Carolina State University is a world leader in the sustainable use of natural resources. The college’s comprehensive approach to teaching, research and service encompass the many and varied ways in which people’s physical, economic and social needs are met through the wise use of natural resources.

Essential Job Duties

Full-time, 12-month, tenure-track position focused on forest economics and timber marketing with a 70% commitment to extension, to include discipline-guided inquiry, 20% commitment to teaching and mentoring, and a 10% commitment to service. The ideal candidate will have a combination of knowledge, skills and experience that will allow them to work in areas of timber marketing and forest economics to include modeling of forest economic impact, financial management of forest assets, non-industrial private forestry, and forest certification.

Scope of Duties:
1.- Develop an innovative, state-wide extension program, to include evaluation and accountability
2. – Perform discipline-guided inquiry that is in line with their Extension program.
3. – Work with other faculty to develop funding for extension-relevant projects that support graduate students and expand the impact of their extension program.
4. – Work in support of Cooperative Extension Service Extension field faculty in North Carolina’s 100 counties and the Cherokee Indian Reservation.
5. – Teach two classes per year in support of the Department’s curricula and reflecting the applicant’s area of expertise.
6. – Provide service to the department, college/and or university and external professional organizations.

Other Work/Responsibilities
Minimum Education/Experience

A Ph.D. in forest economics, forest management, or related area is required upon hiring.

The successful applicant must have the ability and desire to develop and conduct an effective extension and education program in cooperation with faculty, staff, government and non-government organizations, and industry. The individual must be able to communicate effectively in writing and orally with a wide range of audiences including the lay public using traditional and innovative technology transfer techniques.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

1.- Experience with economic and/or financial analysis, such as input-output modeling, linear or goal programming-based financial decision models, and the tradeoffs associated therein, is desired.
2.- Ability and desire to develop and conduct an effective extension and education program in cooperation with faculty, staff, government and non-government organizations , and industry.
3.- Able to communicate effectively in writing and orally with a wide range of audiences including the lay public using traditional and innovative technology transfer techniques
