North Carolina Cooperative Extension gives our residents easy access to the resources and expertise of NC State University and NC A&T State University. Through educational programs, publications, and events, Cooperative Extension field faculty deliver unbiased, research-based information to North Carolina citizens.

Haywood County is home for over 500 farming operations and an estimated 48,000 acres of land in farming. Key agricultural enterprises in Haywood County include vegetables, apples, cattle and tobacco. Haywood County is home to the WNC Regional Livestock Center (www.wncregionallivestockcenter.com) and the Mountain Research Station (www.ncagr.gov/research/mrs.htm).

Annual receipts by Haywood farmers exceed $19 million, with a significant portion being generated through animal agriculture. The Town of Waynesville is the county’s largest municipality and the county seat. The county population is 60,000. Haywood County is located in the mountain region of western North Carolina, approximately 25 miles west of Asheville, NC and approximately 250 miles from our State Capital, Raleigh, NC.

Essential Job Duties

The Extension Agent is responsible for planning, implementing and evaluating an outcome-based program addressing issues and opportunities identified in Haywood County.

Other Work/Responsibilities

This position will demand a dynamic and enthusiastic individual with a broad background of knowledge in animal agriculture including, but not limited to dairy and beef cattle, lambs, goats, poultry, and horses. Livestock production in Haywood County is diverse, including all those species mentioned .

This position works closely with the 4-H program to provide leadership for a highly successful 4-H youth livestock and dairy programs. This position will also provide leadership to the operation of the Haywood County Fair Youth Livestock Shows. Responsibilities of the position will include the development of educational programs in animal agriculture, 4-H youth livestock and dairy programs, forages, waste management, farm safety, field crops, and pesticide safety education duties.

Minimum Experience/Education

One of the following educational requirements: – A Bachelor’s degree with a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 overall or a 3.0 (based on a 4.0 scale) in an agricultural or related field, – A Bachelor’s degree and the completion of at least one-half of coursework in a Master’s degree curriculum with a cumulative grade point average 3.0 or higher with at least one of the degrees in an agricultural or related field, or – Completion of a Master’s degree with at least one of the degrees in an agricultural or related field. Also required: a personal automobile; computer literacy; strong oral and written communication skills; the ability to plan, implement, market, and evaluate educational programs; willingness to work as a team member and support a total Extension program; and the ability to handle multiple demands and set priorities. Personal Attributes: Successful performance of the duties encompassed in the Extension Agent’s job requires that the individual possess habits of industry, a sense of responsibility, and a genuine appreciation for the worth of the individual. The employee must be adept in both oral and written communication. The Extension Agent is eligible to become a member of the non-tenure track/special faculty at North Carolina State University. The Extension Agent has primary responsibility for planning, executing, and evaluating that phase of Extension programs within assigned areas of program responsibility. The Extension Agent cooperates with colleagues in the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service and leaders in performing assigned responsibilities. The performance of assigned responsibilities is governed by the philosophy, objectives, policies, and procedures of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service.

Departmental Required Skills

Travel within the county is required. Some travel within the district and state is also required.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

- A Master’s degree is preferred.
- Previous Cooperative Extension and/or relevant experience.
- Experience in planning and implementing programs.
- Experience working effectively as a team member.
- Possession of strong communication skills.
