North Carolina Cooperative Extension gives our residents easy access to the resources and expertise of NC State University and NC A&T State University. Through educational programs, publications and events, Cooperative Extension agents deliver unbiased, research-based information to North Carolina citizens.

Hyde County is a coastal county in North Carolina bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the east, Dare, Tyrrell, and Washington Counties to the north, Beaufort County to the west and Pamlico to the south. The County is divided by the Pamlico Sound yielding Mainland Hyde and Ocracoke Island. The land area of Hyde County is 612.80 square miles or 392,211 acres. There are 811 square miles of water in Hyde County. Of the land area, 34% is in public trust which includes the Department of Fish and Wildlife, National Park Service and North Carolina Wildlife Resources. The current population is estimated at 5,526. There are three schools in the county – Mattamuskeet Elementary, Mattamuskeet Early College High School and Ocracoke School with an estimate of 581 students in Pre-K through 13th year.

Essential Job Duties

The 4-H program provides research-based activities and classes that help youth ages 5-18 learn new skills, teach youth how to serve their communities and become better leaders. The individual in this position will provide leadership for the total 4-H program. They will be responsible for planning, implementing and evaluating all programs, as well as reporting impacts. Other duties include recruiting volunteers, developing and maintaining 4-H clubs, organizing and leading special interest events, participating and leading district and state events and growing the school enrichment program.

Other Work/Responsibilities

The Hyde County 4-H Extension Agent will be the Program Manager for the Hyde Youth Services/JCPC Program that is funded by the NC Department of Public Safety. The 4-H Extension Agent will be the immediate supervisor for the Program Coordinator. They will be responsible for securing funds, supervision of program coordinator and attending quarterly JCPC Meetings.

The applicant must be self-directed and possess a strong work ethic with skills in leadership, teamwork, communication, grant writing, public relations, planning, implementing and evaluating.

Minimum Experience/Education

One of the following educational requirements: – A Bachelor’s degree with a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 overall or a 3.0 (based on a 4.0 scale) in child or youth development or related field, – A Bachelor’s degree and the completion of at least one-half of coursework in a Master’s degree curriculum with a cumulative grade point average 3.0 or higher with at least one of the degrees in child or youth development or related field, or – Completion of a Master’s degree with at least one of the degrees in child or youth development or related field. Also required: a personal automobile; computer literacy; strong oral and written communication skills; the ability to plan, implement, market, and evaluate educational programs; willingness to work as a team member and support a total Extension program; and the ability to handle multiple demands and set priorities. Personal Attributes: Successful performance of the duties encompassed in the County Extension Agent’s job requires that the individual possess habits of industry, a sense of responsibility, and a genuine appreciation for the worth of the individual. The employee must be adept in both oral and written communication. The County Extension Agent is eligible to become a member of the non-tenure track/special faculty at North Carolina State University. The County Extension Agent has primary responsibility for planning, executing, and evaluating that phase of county Extension programs within assigned areas of program responsibility. The County Extension Agent cooperates with colleagues in the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service and county leaders in performing assigned responsibilities. The performance of assigned responsibilities is governed by the philosophy, objectives, policies, and procedures of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service.

Departmental Required Skills

A Bachelor’s degree in child or youth development, family and consumer sciences, or a related discipline is required.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

A related Master’s degree is preferred.

Required License or Certification

A valid drivers license is required.
