Primary Function of Organizational Unit

North Carolina Cooperative Extension gives our residents easy access to the resources and expertise of NC State University and NC A&T State University. Through educational programs, publications, and events, Cooperative Extension field faculty deliver unbiased, research-based information to North Carolina citizens.

Nash County is home for 430 farming operations. Having an estimated 84,000 acres of harvested cropland, Nash ranks sixth for the value of its total annual crop production and third for its production of each flue cured tobacco and sweet potatoes among all North Carolina counties. Annual receipts by Nash farmers exceed $220 million, with a significant portion being generated through the sale of broilers and eggs. The City of Rocky Mount is the county’s largest municipality. The Town of Nashville is the county seat.

Edgecombe County covers 505 square miles of prime agricultural land in the Upper Coastal Plains in northeastern North Carolina. Edgecombe County is located approximately 107 miles from the nearest beach, Atlantic Beach, NC and is located approximately 75 miles from our State Capital, Raleigh, NC. The county population is 56,552. The county seat and home of the Edgecombe County Extension Center is Tarboro. It was named after the Tar River that borders the town on two sides. The largest town is Rocky Mount, which encompasses parts of Edgecombe and Nash Counties.

Essential Job Duties

The Extension Agent is responsible for planning, implementing and evaluating an outcome-based program addressing issues and opportunities identified in Edgecombe and Nash Counties. This position will demand a dynamic and enthusiastic individual with a broad background of knowledge in animal agriculture including, but not limited to swine, cattle, lambs, goats, poultry and horses. Livestock production in Edgecombe and Nash Counties is diverse and includes cow-calf operations, contract hog operations, and poultry operations which provides 39% and 43% respectively of gross agricultural income. This position works closely with the 4-H program to provide the leadership for a highly successful 4-H youth livestock program. This position will also provide leadership to the operation of the East Carolina Agriculture & Education Center/Livestock Arena. Responsibilities of the position will include the development of educational programs in animal agriculture, 4-H youth livestock & equine, forages, waste management, farm safety, and pesticide education duties.

This position is housed in Edgecombe County.

Other Work/Responsibilities

The Candidate selected for this position shall possess a high degree of subject-matter competence, the ability to work independently and handle multiple demands, and the ability to set priorities and meet deadlines. The candidate must be able to network with diverse audiences, customers, volunteers, Extension Specialists, and the local Extension staff. The candidate must be a team player and support the total Extension program, possess strong oral and written communication skills, possess appropriate computer skills, and be willing to actively seek outside resources to enhance the program. The candidate must be able to develop and implement innovative strategies for presenting educational programs and provide leadership in planning, implementing, marketing and evaluating educational programs and activities with measurable impacts.

Minimum Experience/Education

One of the following educational requirements: – A Bachelor’s degree with a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 overall or a 3.0 (based on a 4.0 scale) in the job related field, – A Bachelor’s degree and the completion of at least one-half of coursework in a Master’s degree curriculum with a cumulative grade point average 3.0 or higher with at least one of the degrees in the job related field, or – Completion of a Master’s degree with at least one of the degrees in the job related field. Also required: a personal automobile; computer literacy; strong oral and written communication skills; the ability to plan, implement, market, and evaluate educational programs; willingness to work as a team member and support a total Extension program; and the ability to handle multiple demands and set priorities. Personal Attributes: Successful performance of the duties encompassed in the County Extension Area Agent’s job requires that the individual possess habits of industry, a sense of responsibility, and a genuine appreciation for the worth of the individual. The employee must be adept in both oral and written communication. The County Extension Area Agent is eligible to become a member of the non-tenure track/special faculty at North Carolina State University. The County Extension Area Agent has primary responsibility for planning, executing, and evaluating that phase of county Extension programs within assigned areas of program responsibility. The County Extension Area Agent cooperates with colleagues in the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service and county leaders in performing assigned responsibilities. The performance of assigned responsibilities is governed by the philosophy, objectives, policies, and procedures of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service.

Departmental Required Skills

A Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science or related field is required. A Master’s degree is preferred.
The person in this position must be self-directed and possess a strong work ethic. The successful candidate should be energetic, innovative, and a good manager of time and other resources.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

A Master’s degree at time of hiring is desirable, with at least one degree in animal science or a related field. The expectation is that a Master’s degree will be pursued after hiring.

Required License or Certification

Valid driver’s license and reliable personal transportation required and must be maintained.
