Primary Function of Organizational Unit

The Analytical Instrumentation Facility (AIF) seeks a talented and industrious experimentalist to join our team as an Electron Microscopy Specialist. The AIF is NC State University’s primary shared facility for materials characterization with a mission to enable and lead state-of-the-art research through acquisition, development, maintenance, training, and access to major analytical and materials characterization instrumentation. Through the support of engaged faculty and experienced staff, the AIF supports state-of-the-art scanning and transmission electron microscopes, X-ray scattering and spectroscopy instruments, mass spectrometry, scanning probe microscopy, nanoindentation, and extensive sample preparation facilities. The AIF is a core nanotechnology user facility in the new Research Triangle Nanotechnology Network (RTNN), a site in the National Nanotechnology Coordinated Infrastructure (NNCI).

Essential Job Duties

Primary responsibilities of the new staff position include training new users (both internal users from NC State and those external to NC State) as well as performing service work for external clients. The ideal candidate will be customer-focused and exhibit a commitment to excellence in all technical and organizational aspects of their role. The new staff member will work closely with the AIF and RTNN teams in serving the needs of university, industrial, and government researchers from across NC State, the North Carolina Research Triangle, and the nation.

Other Work/Responsibilities

- Perform microscopy services and analysis of data using Scanning and Transmission Electron Microscopes with a focus on the JEOL 2010F, FEI Titan, FEI Quanta, and FEI Verios instruments.
- Train internal NC State users and external academic, government, and industrial users on operation of the instrument and interpretation of data.
- Assist with maintenance and calibration of the JEOL 2010F, FEI Titan, FEI Quanta, and FEI Verios instruments and all detectors.
- Process internal paperwork associated with enabling and accounting for these services.
- Design, schedule, and execute at least four seminars and/or user short courses each year that inform users of established and emerging instrument techniques and data quantification methods to improve the quality of education and research at the University.
- Keep users informed of emerging techniques, training activities, and software/data analysis programs available.
- Stay abreast of software and hardware developments by reading current literature and attending relevant technical conferences and short courses.
- Communicate the need for instrument upgrades and develop strategies and proposals for acquiring equipment upgrades or replacements.
- Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education/Experience

Bachelors degree in a physical science discipline related to electron microscopy.

Departmental Required Skills

Prior experience with electron microscopy.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

Advanced degree (e.g., Masters) and experience performing electron microscopy work for others in a shared or core laboratory.
