Primary Function of Organizational Unit

As part of the Chancellor’s Faculty Excellence Program, NC State University seeks an informal science education scholar to join the Leadership in Public Science cluster. The position is an open rank tenured/tenure track position, projected to begin in August 2017 and is targeted for the Department of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Education. We seek innovative and transformative academic leaders whose scholarship will advance NC State’s position as one of the premier universities of its kind. The Leadership in Public Science cluster builds on a nationally leading, campus-wide strength in public science, science communication and education, and science outreach including partnerships with the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, the Friday Institute for Educational Innovation, and the Science House. Colleges participating in this cluster include the College of Education, the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, the College of Natural Resources, and the College of Sciences (http://workthatmatters.ncsu.edu/).

Essential Job Duties

We seek a collaborative informal science education scholar. The scholar should have a proven record of publications and grants, practice in life-long science learning (i.e., K-adults) within informal settings such as museums, science centers, aquaria, zoos, planetariums, environmental centers, after school programs, summer camps, and/or science outreach programs.
The faculty member will teach courses (undergraduate and graduate) in informal science and STEM education; recruit and mentor graduate students; continue a program of well-established and focused research and related publications; generate externally funded projects; provide leadership and service to the program area, department, college, university, and scholarly organizations and develop and maintain high impact outreach and engagement activities.

A central responsibility of the role is to collaborate with members of a faculty cluster to promote informal science education and public understanding of science. Together with its other members, the faculty member will participate in the activities of the Leadership in Public Science cluster. Working together, members of this cluster will organize science communication workshops, as well as convene statewide, regional, national, and international scholars, public science communicators and educators, business and government leaders, and policy analysts across a wide range of disciplines to expand and extend scholarship and public engagement in science.

Minimum Education/Experience

Doctorate in science education or equivalent (must be conferred by date of application); well-established and sustained record of scholarship and external funding; and a record for exemplary teaching and advising.

Departmental Required Skills

A commitment to collaborative research across disciplines is necessary.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

Preferred experiences include work with underserved populations (people in poverty, underrepresented minorities in STEM), schools, and preservice and in-services teachers. Scholars who demonstrate innovation in informal settings are highly desired.
